Soule: Who We Are
Seekers of Unity, Love & Equality, Soule , is a digital destination for news, opinions, life and culture for the LGBTQIA people of color. SOULE uplifts, empowers and inspires pride via SOULE.LGBT (website), SOULE special events and SOULE Magazine, a vibrant and engaging quarterly magazine.
Soule started after our founder, Elijah Li, matriculated through a few institutions and recognized a lack of diversified representation at events and in media on campus pertaining to LGBTIA people of color. It was just a thought until he was inspired by the movie Brother to Brother (2004), directed by Rodney Evans.
Brother to Brother covers the life of Perry, a gay African American youth and his interactions with Bruce Nugent, an author and contributor to the literary magazine: Fire!!.
Fire!! magazine started during the Harlem Renaissance and was used to facilitate the exploration of issues that were taboo in Black community, like homosexuality, bisexuality, interracial relationships, promiscuity, prostitution, and color prejudice.
Standing on the shoulders of its predecessors, the mission of Soule is to promote the discussion of issues surrounding the LGBTIA people of color community, as well as empower individuals to take action changing their lives and inspiring others as well.
