Last week GLAAD released it’s fourth annual Studio Responsibility Index, which highlights the inclusion of LGBT characters. In 2015, all studios included LGBT characters in less than 40% of their films. However, Disney and Paramount Studios did not include any characters in their 2015 blockbusters.
As a solution to this stark lack of inclusion, GLAAD suggested that Disney include LGBT characters in it’s sci-fi division, which includes it’s Marvel and Star Wars division.
“As sci-fi projects have the special opportunity to create unique worlds whose advanced societies can serve as a commentary on our own, the most obvious place where Disney could include LGBT characters is in the upcoming eighth ‘Star Wars film.”
GLAAD thinks the sci-fi division is great avenue for inclusion, given the huge success of the 2015’s ‘The Force Awakens’ which introduced a new and diverse central trio.
“Too often, the few LGBT characters that make it to the big screen are the target of a punchline or token characters. The film industry must embrace new and inclusive stories if it wants to remain competitive and relevant.”
Disney may take GLAAD’s suggestion into consideration, however the general consensus is that Disney would have more success with it’s animated series, Frozen. Fan’s have taken to twitter with the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend.
