patti-labelle-pie

I hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving and all that jazz. Personally, mine was alright but I know you all missed your nice warm tea to go with your feast. Well, I’m back!

Our Lady, Patti Labelle has always and will forever be our Godmother of Soul. And now her name is everywhere all thanks to one loud and proud gay man, James Wright Chanel. His video reviewing Patti’s new pies, affectionately known as the “Patti Pies,” made the dessert a cultural juggernaut. People have been calling, I have been traveling and chile, I still haven’t found the damn pie. Chanel has been doing humorous viral videos for a while but this video seemed to catch on. Probably on account of his outrageous singing and loveable personality.

Now, Miss Patti caught a bit of flack for attempting to surpress James’s success, as if anybody knew her pies before the video caught the world’s attention. But that was resolved and she invited him to her Thanksgiving dinner where they sang, got merry and had a big ol’ ki’ki. James will probably be all over television for the next couple of months with a Steve Harvey Show apperance already scheduled. Good job, sis. And make sure Patti Labelle pays you for your work. Hopefully by then I will have bene able to have tried a Patti Pie for myself or maybe one of you nice young folk can send your Auntie one to taste.

One of my favorite shows from this year was definitely The Prancing Elites. It focused on a group of LGBT Black men who were apart of a dance team focused on “j-setting.” Despite controversy, the show did a great job of showing young men and a transwoman navigating life and their dreams of being popular dancers. Oxygen announced just this week that the show would be coming back for a second season. There’s been criticism that the boys are too effeminate but I think it’s important to show truth and Kareem, Adrian, Tim, Kentrell and Jerel are as true as they come. Way to go, guys!

In other news, if you haven’t heard, actress Sheryl Lee Ralph has helped bring a brave new musical, Mighty Real Sylvester, to the stage. Starring Anthony Wayne as the groundbreaking 70’s disco diva, Sylvester, the musical pays homage to the icon’s life and up & downs, using his music to guide audiences through his journey. The show has been a success off-Broadway but now due to great demand, there is work being done to bring the show to the Big Apple right on Broadway. They’ve recently reached their fundraising goal and are looking to keep everyone involved in their process. If “Mighty Real Sylvester” makes it to Broadway, it would be the first Broadway musical about a Black gay man. Look out New York, here they come!
