[FRESHLY SERVED] What’s Tea, 50?!
Oh, man. Watch What Happens: Live! always seems to bring out the craziness in people and Sunday night was more than proof of this. Host Andy Cohen’s guests were Real Housewives star Kandi Burruss and famed actress/socialite Vivica A. Fox, who is about to appear in a few episodes of “Empire” as Cookie’s sister. Over the past few years, Fox has been more well known for her affiliations with people and social notoriety than her feature films. Her relationship with 50 Cent could figuratively be when she “jumped the shark.” Remember at the 2003 Video Music Awards when Vivica dropped it for a hot link on stage with the Ying Yang Twins? Yeah, that was the end.
Cohen asked Fox her thoughts on 50’s statements on “Empire” promoting a gay agenda. In true Vivica fashion, she threw a bit of shade, implying that the rapper may be gay his damn self. Chiiiile. Of course, she laughed it off but not without bringing attention to how homoerotic 50 Cent has been, reminding us of that awful XXL cover featuring the rapper as Souljah Boy’s “booty snatcher,” in Fox’s words.
Of course, the sentiments were mixed in regards to Vivica’s statements. Personally, I found it to be funny. 50 Cent is known for his blatant homophobia and yet constantly blurs the lines. Let’s point out the fact that the cover of his most successful albums have always had 50 with his shirt off, even though his demographic was mainly heterosexual men. As homophobic as hip-hop is, it’s also incredibly homoerotic and Fox spit fire by being able to point that out.
Some say that Fox’s comments echo a homophobic foundation of constantly degrading a man by calling him “gay.” While this is a fair assessment, I don’t think Fox’s comments were driven by wanting to take a chip at 50’s manhood rather than bring awareness to his hypocrisy. Plus I don’t want to live in a world where we fight to be so politically correct about our statements that every time somebody takes a drink and comments about something on television, they have to apologize the next day for being offensive to someone.
In other news, white gays found time to honor Black LGBT activists with the annual Out Magazine’s Out100 list, featuring the most compelling LGBT people. Black Lives Matter creator Alicia Garza and activist DeRay Mckesson both grabbed spots along with musicians L1ef, Shamir and Alex Newell. Unfortunately, somebody found time to celebrate Raven Symone. I guess they didn’t have not a single clue of the problematic comments she’s made towards people like Garza including this week, calling into question why “Black Lives Matter” wasn’t involved in Mizzou. Why she still here?!
BET.com unveiled a new documentary last week, directed by writer Clay Cane, entitled “Holler If You Hear Me.” The doc focuses on being Black and gay in the church and the intersections that create for disarray and oppression for LGBT people of color. I applaud BET for giving Cane the platform to promote and feature his documentary on the website but sincerely hope they also air it on television at some point. It is important that the voices featured are heard by a large community. I encourage everyone to watch it.
