Lieutenant Dan Choi who has just been dismissed from the US Army for "being openly gay", declares that he will try to protest his case during President Barack Obama's upcoming visit to Los Angeles, at a gay protest rally in Hollywood on May 26, 2009. California's Supreme Court upheld a referendum that outlawed gay marriage, but said 18,000 same-sex weddings carried out before the ban would remain valid. Gay and lesbian activists had sought to overturn the result of a November referendum, known as Proposition 8, which redefined marriage in California as being unions between men and women only. The world is full of many wonderful people doing many extraordinary things for the LGBT community. However it’s unfortunate that some may never get the recognition that they deserve. However, SOULE is here to change that with our column entitled, Inspired By. Inspired By is a weekly tribute to an amazing soul that encompasses the true essence of SOULE, an individual who promotes Unity, Love & Equality. Each individual selected has inspired us by their various achievements but also their attitude and values.  Today we celebrate the talented activist , Lt. Dan Choi.

Dan Choi during DADT

Lt. Dan Choi is an American former infantry officer in the United States Army who served in combat in the Iraq warduring 2006-2007. He became an LGBT rights activist following his coming out on The Rachel Maddow Show in March 2009 and publicly challenged America’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, which forbade lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) service members from serving openly.

On October 19, 2010, Choi applied to rejoin the US Army

Dan Choi at protest in DC

One of his most notable protest was March 18, 2010. Choi and another ousted military officer, Capt. Jim Pietrangelo, handcuffed themselves to the fence of the White House. Choi and Pietrangelo were initially set to be tried for “failure to obey a lawful order” on April 26, 2010. Trial was postponed until July 14, at which time the charges against both men were dropped.
