The world is full of many wonderful people doing many extraordinary things for the LGBT community. However it’s unfortunate that some may never get the recognition that they deserve. However, SOULE is here to change that with our column entitled, Inspired By. Inspired By is a weekly tribute to an amazing soul that encompasses the true essence of SOULE, an individual who promotes Unity, Love & Equality. Each individual selected has inspired us by their various achievements but also their attitude and values. Today we celebrate the talented Minor League baseball player , David Denson.
David Denson, a first baseman for the Milwaukee Brewers’ rookie affiliate in Helena, Montana,is now first active gay player in Major League Baseball history. Denson told the Journal Sentinel that,“It started to affect my game because I was so caught up in trying to hide it.” “There was that stereotype stuck in my head that there would never be a gay player on a team.”
A gay slur in the locker room was the final straw for Denson. “Be careful what you say,” Denson told his teammate before coming out to the entire team. (Takepart)
For Denson to live freely, he needed to tell more people than just his teammates. He worked with former MLB player Billy Bean—who serves as the league’s inclusion ambassador—to make his announcement public. (Takepart)
We are truly inspired by David Denson staying true to himself and not being afraid to come out while actively pursuing his sports profession. We thank him for his dedication to truth and the pursuit of Unity, Love & Equality
