man balanced on a rock

As a Virgo, I like to have things in order; neat, well put together…I like everything to be organized. However, I realized that lately a lot of things in my life have been out of balance. So, I wanted to take some time to myself to figure out how I can have a better-balanced life, both personally and professionally.

In my opinion, having a balanced life means that you have a handle on the various elements in your life. I have discovered that maintaining a healthy life balance is not only essential for happiness and well being; but it can have a really big impact on your productivity in business and personal relationships as well. I think the key to developing a well-balanced life is to not change everything all at once but to make small adjustments to your everyday life that works best for you. As you start to make these positive adjustments, and you start seeing the change in your health, attitude and productivity, it will be much better to maintain this newfound equilibrium lifestyle.

Here are eight strategies that you can try to help you develop a more balanced life:

  • Develop a sense of humor; life has no guarantees and you aren’t getting out alive, so have fun! Laugh and smile as much as you possibly can!
  • I understand that we live in a world where technology (social media) HAS taken over but try to disconnect even if only for a few hours a day…OKAY! A week…geesh!
  • Expand your mind! When was the last time you read a book? Or take a class? Find something that inspires or interests you!
  • Make your health a priority – people always say “Yeah, I know but I don’t have time” Stop making these silly excuses! Your health is paramount! It’s been proven that our quality of life does improve when we get enough sleep, or when we eat a more balanced diet or when we remain active. Not only that, but we are more energized and happy! Why wait until we have a health crisis before taking action.
  • Treat yourself. One of my daily affirmations is “Don’t treat anybody better than you treat yourself. EVER.” You have to LOVE yourself and you have to LOVE taking care of yourself. It doesn’t need to be costly, it can be something as simple as getting a manicure or pedicure, taking yourself on a date once a month, yes YOU taking YOU on a date. I know a guy that buys himself flowers every month! Treat yourself how you’d like others to treat you!
  • Be positive! I can’t stress this enough! Surround yourself with people who are positive, supportive and optimistic, let their attitude and zest for life rub all over you. Try to limit or completely detach yourself for negative influence, people who complain ALL-THE-TIME, pessimist, etc. these type of people will do nothing but drag you down. Don’t lose sight of your blessings and what’s important, believe me there’s ALWAYS something to be grateful for.
  • Remember I talked about how important it was to disconnect from technology? Well it is equally or more so important to connect with your family, friends and loved ones. Make time for the people who really matter. Plan a romantic evening with your significant other, go bike riding with a friend, schedule dinner once or twice a month with family. ENGAGE with the people you love and the ones who add value to your life.
  • Some of us will dread this last one, but I implore you to embrace it. Spend time alone. Learn to spend time alone and enjoy your own company. If you don’t enjoy being around you, who will? You can develop a new hobby, yes? Perhaps your alone time means being at the gym, taking up yoga, meditating, writing, spending time in the park, or it can be sitting at home doing absolutely nothing! Spending time alone is a great way to explore your creativity, lower your stress level and increase your happiness.
