June marks the beginning of Black Music Month. “What is Black Music Month?” , you may ask… In June of 1979 President Jimmy Carter along with the support of song writer Kenny Gamble designated June as the time to formally honor the rich history black music. This year in honor of Black Music Month, SOULE will celebrate a black LGBT music artist for each day of the month.
Today we celebrate the talented, IZM. The IZM., an New Jersey based lyricist and producer, doesn’t fit into a box and he likes it that way. He is a product of his influences, from the alternative sounds of Fiona Apple to the conscious sway of Common. He speaks from his own experiences and self-describes his music as alternative hip-hop, paying homage to the golden age of hip-hop. The IZM.’s “I Don’t Feel God”, from his King For A Day project, has been featured in the film and on the soundtrack of the newest Spike Lee joint, Da Sweet Blood of Jesus. The soundtrack is available on ITunes and all major online retailers via Epic Records.
