June marks the beginning of Black Music Month. “What is Black Music Month?” , you may ask… In June of 1979 President Jimmy Carter along with the support of song writer Kenny Gamble designated June as the time to formally honor the rich history black music. This year in honor of Black Music Month, SOULE will celebrate a black LGBTQ music artist for each day of the month. So who are we highlighting this month?? None other than, RuPaul!
Today we celebrate the talented, RuPaul. RuPaul Andre Charles (born November 17, 1960), best known as RuPaul, is an American actor, drag queen, model, author, and recording artist, who first became widely known in the 1990s when he appeared in a wide variety of television programs, films, and musical albums.
RuPaul has a successful hit television series on the network LOGO, entitled “Ru Pauls Drag Race” A competition for Drag queens to strut their stuff and show the world who the real queen is. It is filled with drama, fun, celebrity judges and of course, RuPaul! The show is on its 8th season and is very successful.
With all his accoplishments, it is clear why RuPaul is the first person we are honoring for Black music month. RuPaul is an icon and inspiration, not just to the LGBTQ community, but to any queen with a dream.
RuPaul has been a fixture on the Atlanta and New York City club scenes.(Wiki) Ru’s latest album Realness 2015 is a definite must listen as well.
