Popular television show “Black-Ish” is well known for using their platform to discuss taboo subjects are frowned upon within the Black community. The latest topic of conversation on the show was homophobia within the African-American household. Raven Symone made her debut on the show taking on the role of “Rhonda”, Dre’s lesbian sister.

During the episode Raven brings home her fiancé (pictured above) who isn’t acknowledged as a romantic partner by anyone is her family besides Dre. Eventually the two have a conversation about her sexuality and her girlfriend that help Dre better understand what it means to be a lesbian.

Things get crazy when Dre attempts to defend Rhonda by outing her to their mother.

“Why is he toasting her mechanic at my brunch?” Ruby asks Rainbow.

“Mama, Sharon isn’t just Rhonda’s mechanic. Sharon is Rhonda’s girlfriend,”

Rhonda shoots Dre a shady look.

“Sis, I got this. It’s time that we all stop pretending. Mother, your daughter is as gay as the day is long,” Dre says.

All hell breaks loose when their mother goes on an anti-gay religion fueled spiel about how wrong homosexuality is and how no child of hers would ever be gay. By the end of the episode all’s well that ends well and mom comes around to the idea of her daughter being gay. She even agrees to attend their wedding.

Homophobia is prevalent within the African-American community and while many people would prefer to tip toe around the issue, we appreciate the fact that the writers of “Black-ish” addressed it head on.  Check out a clip from the episode below. Read more about the full episode HERE.
